The heavy rain and strong winds Friday afternoon sent computer networks crashing at Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport, delaying thousands of travelers for hours.

Queues of travelers got stuck from 2pm to 7.30pm, unable to complete entry and exit formalities because of the crash.

An airport official said rainwater had seeped into an outside joint in the system.

Police Senior Lieutenant Colonel Dau Hien Luong said the system had been repaired by the airport’s technical staff.

The torrential rain and wind also toppled many large trees in the city, some on top of houses, sending them crashing.

Some areas in districts 1 and 3 reported power cuts.

Arterial roads like Dien Bien Phu and Nguyen Thi Minh Khai in districts 1, 3, 10, Binh Thanh, Go Vap, and Tan Binh were under 70 cm of water.

The southern weather bureau has warned of more such downpours and gales in the next few days.
