Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan has urged the tourism sector to work out measures to restore and develop its operations in Japanese and Korean markets.
Mr Nhan, who is also head of the Tourism National Steering Committee, was speaking at the committee’s first working session in 2008.
According to the National Administration of Tourism (VNAT), the number of tourists from Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) - considered Vietnam’s largest tourism markets - declined in the first three months of 2008.
Speaking at the meeting, VNAT’s Travel Department Director Vu The Binh attributed the situation to poor planning and a shortage of Japanese and Korean speaking tour guides.
In 2007, Vietnam saw a sharp increase in the numbers of Korean and Japanese tourists to 475,000 and 438,000, respectively. However, the country failed to provide high quality services for the visitors.
To solve the problem, inspections of tourism activities will be carried out in Hanoi, Quang Ninh and Ho Chi Minh City with the aim of detecting and dealing with illegal travel agencies.
Moreover, the tourism sector should find solutions for increasing the numbers of Japanese and Korean speaking tour guides as both Japanese and Korean visitors prefer using their own languages.
